Get Fit This Autumn! - By Gail Kasper

There’s something in the air. Can you feel it? It’s fresh and invigorating, and it makes you feel alive! What’s going on? Quite simply, fall is almost here. I love that time of year with the temperatures dropping, the leaves changing color, and just the right chill in the air reminding us that summer days are over and it’s time to get serious about achieving goals – no more procrastinating! I hope that for each of you, one of these goals is practicing physical fitness on a regular basis. 


Because we can often feel like we are behind the eight ball with relation to getting fit, we may find ourselves doing nothing. Every step counts, literally. As I am sure you see in life, there is no easy way to goal achievement. You must put a plan in place and practice the plan. Often people ask me, “What has been my secret to success?” And whether it is with respect to fitness or any other goal, I always respond with the same answer, it’s discipline. I am willing to sacrifice. Are you willing to sacrifice? Or does the fear of failure creep in causing you to wonder if the discpline is worth it?

When I competed in pageants, I won a number of fitness awards (read more about my passion for fitness in Another Day Without A Cage). As dedicated as I am about keeping fit, I’m just as passionate about sharing my zest for fitness with everyone. Regardless of your age or current physical condition, you can take steps to become more fit, and autumn is a great time to commit to a regular exercise program. 


Follow these tips to help you stay active and fit:


1.Take advantage of the beauty of the season. Head outdoors for some exercise! This is likely the best time of year to be outside because it’s not too hot, not too cold. The fresh autumn air feels great, and the trees look fabulous in their red, orange and gold hues. Fall brings the perfect setting for an outdoor jog, a brisk walk, or a bicycle ride along nature trails. 


2.Sign up at a gym. With winter coming soon, this is a good time to sign up for a membership at a gym, indoor pool, or any other indoor fitness center. Start getting familiar with the facility and the programs offered so that when winter weather does arrive in earnest, you’ll have a place to continue your fitness program.


3.Find a fitness buddy. For many people, exercising is more fun and rewarding when it’s shared with a fitness buddy. You can support each other, keeping both of you accountable to your goals.
