Proactive Business Tactics

We're approaching summers end. Vacation time is over and whether you are a business owner, sales representative, or employee, it's important to fight the challenging economical climate by taking every advantage to be proactive.

The question is: "Have you established a game plan or are you flying by the seat of your pants" Here's a quick way to determine your effectiveness as an employer or an employee:

1. Do you have a daily written plan?

2. Does 20% of your daily business plan account for proactive, revenue-producing efforts, not just busy work?

3. Are you tracking results from every single proactive measure?

4. Do you know which proactive activity produces the greatest results?

If you answered "no" to any of the above, then it is time to create a more specific plan for yourself.

A Written Plan: Each day, whether it's the night before or early that morning, you should have a clear idea of what you need to do that day, hour by hour. You should know which tasks are revenue generating, which tasks are necessary but not directly revenue generating, and which tasks are less important and could potentially wait another day, if needed.

The 20% Rule: Considering that 20% of your day should account for proactive revenue-generating activity, have you identified what those tasks might be? For a business owner, it might mean assigning or delegating tasks to employees, hiring, or even follow up on specific business calls. For an employee, it might mean contacting existing customers, cold calling, or preparing new products for market. Whatever the tasks, make certain they are on your daily activity list. Star them, highlight them, or red flag them, but they must be done.

Track Results: Based on all proactive business generating activity, track results from all activities? Identify what might have caused such results. Are the results because of a market shift, training, or new trends? Once you have identified the answers to these questions, either confirm your direction or change direction, as necessary.

The Greatest Results: Once you have identified which activity produces the greatest results, build great momentum. I do encourage you to also take note to the 2nd highest ranking activity. Is there a way to capitalize on both activities and plan your time accordingly.

Activities that will build your business, increase revenues, and improve your customer satisfaction rate:

•Call existing customers and reevaluate their needs (Is there something more you can do for them?)

•Cold calling new businesses to seek out new opportunities AND to evaluate the potential needs of your market.

•Attend networking events.

•Build Alliances. Determine other related industries/companies who would market to the same customer base and create new friendships.

•Ask for referrals. Ask for referrals. Ask for referrals.
