I love the idea of Halloween and getting the chance to pretend to be something different and unique, but it's so important to make sure the fun activities are safe for everyone, even your pets. If you have a pet, it's a good time to take a few extra precautions. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), our pets can be at risk.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Keep pets indoors. Kids who choose to be mischievous while in costume might not only scare your pet, they may torment them. Don't leave your pets outside.
Also, keep in mind that there are some people who will adopt a cat during Halloween for the sole purpose of having a live decoration. Many of these cats will then be abandoned. Many shelters, now aware of this situation, refuse to allow adoptions until after Halloween. Adoption should be taken very seriously.
2. Keep pets away from candy: Chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in particular quantities; hence it can kill a dog. Keep all candy out of the reach of Fido.
3. Be careful with candles: Fall months are an opportune time to hollow a pumpkin and light a candle, but a pet could easily knock over the pumpkin, starting a fire. Keep all candles out of the reach of children and pets. An entire home can be engulfed in flames in about 10 minutes.
4. Be careful when opening the door: You may love to see the neighborhood children dressed in their favorite costumes, but remember when you open the door, your pet may escape. It will be dark and it can be difficult to find them. Please keep your pet in a secluded area if you plan to open the door. Gail's pick: Put some candy in a basket outside your home with a note for passers by to help themselves. This will decrease stress and tension for your pets as well as keep them safe inside your home.
