Public Speech Design Tips - By Gail Kasper

Too many public speakers who stand up before an audience, the people before them appear to be like a mass of monsters waiting to tear them apart!


It is obvious that the audience are just ordinary people like you; ask them to stand up and speak out, and most of them will try to hide! Collectively, people appear to be daunting, but only if we allow them to be. The key here is don’t let them!


Below are a few points to help you prepare for your public speech:


Know Your Audience: Always look at the audience as a group of individuals. They are people just like us with their desires, phobias, hopes and fears. Of course, this doesn’t mean we should ignore them, and speak only for our own pleasure! On the contrary, every word that you speak must be directed at your audience; your target. Your aim is to give them enjoyment, information, inspiration, whatever the aim of your speech.


Define Your Message: You need to have a message that comes from the heart, because this will give life to your speech. Your speech has to be something that you passionately believe in, and wish to offer to your audience. Without the central passion, your speech will be flat and uninteresting.


Logic vs. Emotion: However, if your speech is only full of emotions without reason, they may not always be acceptable. Use your intellect and your mind; work out a plot to add other aspects to your main theme; include interesting details, references, anecdotes, humor!


Fill Your Speech With Attention-Getters: Your speech should contain all the aspects required to hold your audience’s attention and satisfy them. Think hard on the best way to present your case. Do you want your speech to be casual, dramatic or intimate? Will you be giving out a lot of factual information, and do your need to present visuals? Will you be presenting matter that requires a lot of research? Give a lot of thought and take time to prepare your basic plan, this will pay off at the time of the outcome.


Get the Audience Involved: Don’t forget to ask your audience questions. You just cannot assume things, or you may end up speaking to an audience on a level or a subject, that is not really suitable. Find out beforehand the age and the type of audience you are going to speak to. Find out how many will be attending, so you can figure out whether it will be a speech on a grand scale or more of an informal, cozy chat.
